I'll be in New York City this weekend and want to know some things that are cheap! I'm a poor college student!! I'd really like to know things to do that aren't really touristy and things that mostly only the locals now. Thanks! What are fun, cheap things to do on vacation in NYC?
There's so much cheap/free stuff to do in NYC. First of all, I'm going to suggest that if you want to see a Broadway or Off-Broadway show, do rush/lotto for tickets. You can see shows for as little as $20! I've put two lists of the different Rush/Lottery policies below. If you want to see a show for free, there's Shakespeare in the Park.
Also, there are tons of markets and stuff to check out around the city, especially over the weekend. Union Square has an awesome Greenmarket Saturdays, and Tompkins Square Park has a market on Sundays (I think). There are tons of cool flea markets and thrift shops are around the Tompkins area that are worth checking out.
For good cheap pizza, check out Ray's Pizza. It's sooo yummy. But cheap food's all over the place. Check out the Village Voice restaurant guide, it has lots of great restaurants listed.
If you're here Thursday, check out the Broadway Show League in Central Park. If you're here Monday, there is a free film in Bryant Park.
When my friends and I are bored and don't know what to do, we play a little game. We walk down the street, and when we reach an intersection, we go whatever way the "walk" sign is.
My favourite place to find things to do is the VillageVoice.com . They have listings for everything, it's awesome. Check it out.

Try the zoos -- the Bronx Zoo is the best, but Central Park is cheaper makes a nice hour; also Bronx Botanical Garden (just take Metro-North from Grand Central, train will leave you right across the street on Sat %26amp; Sun get a City Ticket for $3) or Prospect Park. Go to Coney Island, then walk to the Brooklyn Cyclones (minor league baseball) or visit the Aquarium. Both the Metropolitan and Natural History Museums are by donation, so you can give them a couple dollars instead of suggested admission.
Check out lower level of Grand Central for (relatively) affordable food.
Be sure to buy Unlimited ride MetroCard for $7, good for buses and subways. www.mnr.org will give you all the public transit info.

The Natural History Museum is by donation. They will tell you it is suggested to pay a certain price, but you can pay a nickel, quarter, whatever you want and they have to let you in. Also, there is a book by Sheckys called Dirt Cheap NYC go to www.sheckys.com, click on NY nightlife and then under events click on publications. What are fun, cheap things to do on vacation in NYC?
Eat your meals from street vendors, pizza places, or delis.
Go to Central Park.
Explore Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chinatown.
Walk around Manhattan or take the subway if you're going long distances. You can buy a day pass.
The skating rink in Rockefeller Center is an outdoor bar in the summer. Drinks are not too expensive and it's a nice, centrally located place.
