Fun, inexpensive things to do in NYC/NJ?

My cousin is taking my sister and I for a week to New York, and she wants me to compile a list of things to do. We're only going to be about half an hour from the city.

Please, nothing expensive! Thanks.Fun, inexpensive things to do in NYC/NJ?
I have to disagree with going to Cafe Wha on MacDougal.... Why because the one time I went they added a $12 cover charge to my bill without telling us. We told the manager since we were not informed we would not be paying that.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Natural History Museum have a suggested price. This means you can go there and pay what you want. Granted the Museum's use the money for a good cause, but if you don't have a lot of money to spend at least they accept whatever you want to give.

The Museum of Design is free on Thursdays and is located near Columbus Circle. Also the New Museum has a free day as well... you have to go to their website.

Take the 7 Train out into Queens and visit PS1 the annex of the MoMA. Across the street you find a place called 5 Ptz. It is one big graffiti mural where artists from around the world get permission to paint there, it is constantly changing and really cool.

The Hi Line park in the Meatpacking District is really nice as well. It used to be part of the old railroad system in the city. It finally has been turned into a park... take in a sunset and relax! You can also take a stroll through the Chelsea Market which is really nice as well.

Central Park.... of course you can't go wrong here.... an amazing place. Bethesda Fountain, Belvedere Castle, the Carousel, etc. But you already know about this probably... so why not check out Prospect Park in Brooklyn or the new parks along the East River in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn.

If it is your first time in NYC, you will probably go to Times Square. I try my best to avoid that area when I can.... but everyone should go there at least once. Toys R Us is cool... big Ferris Wheel, a huge Jurassic Park Dinosaur, a giant Barbie House. Then take a gander at 1515 Broadway home of MTV Networks... You can't tour it, but you can take a picture. Walk to the M%26amp;M Store and past the Ed Sullivan Theatre.

Another fun little treat is Dhylan's Candy Shop near Bloomingdales. Created by the daughter of Ralph Lauren it is a candy filled place that is fun to check out.

It really all depends on what you want to see... you could spend years in NYC and still discover new things to do.

Oh look up the restaurant called Ninja... pretty cool spot...Fun, inexpensive things to do in NYC/NJ?

The staten island ferry is free and it takes you from manhattan to staten island: Free

There are way too many things to do in the city, but most require money. The only thing free is the parks. Which are pretty and have all the crazy new york people you see on tv.
