There are a few restaurants that can adjust the menu for Celiac's on the Upper East Side. One is Peter's which is a Diner on 1st avenue between 83rd and 84ths street. There is also Opus on 2nd avenue between 82nd and 81st street. There is a pizza place called Slice on 2nd btwn 73rd and 74th street that makes Corn Crusts i believe, I know they do Spelt but you can't have that. There is also Viva Cafe on 2nd Avenue between 11th and 12th street in the East Village that makes Corn Crusted slices last time I checked. I'd contact all before going however just to confirm. Thai food and Indian food can be good because they often use Rice Noodles. Japanese has Soba (buckwheat) but usually not 100% so you must ask. Vegetarian restaurants are indeed an option but they often use wheat as the "animal" substitute. Just be sure to ask them to leave out soy sauce and find out what thickener's are used etc. a good restaurant will know and will be happy to help you..
there is an italian restaurant in the west Village called Risotteria
and Sacred Chow puts a GF next to foods that are on their menu's
edit: Slice can make a rice crust (not corn)What are things to do in NYC and where to eat when you have celiac??
celiac can get pretty serious - a good old friend of mine has it and he has to be really careful. it's not enough to go to a veg restaurant, since they can also use gluten all over the place. you might want to do more research on what restaurants actually are aware of celiac needs, and try to find a list of okay places to eat. in a city like NYC, there are enough people here that some support group and restaurant list should exist...What are things to do in NYC and where to eat when you have celiac??
There are quite a few vegetarian restaurants. NY restaurants are accustomed to people asking what ingredients are used in the preparation.so go ahead and ask before ordering.
Two restaurants I would recommend are Mooncake on 30 St off 8th ave and Sooyen on 13 st off University place. there are also a few good Korean places on 32 st.
Good Luck and enjoy
