Ive been to NYC a few times and would like to do some different things when i am not shopping! I've heard about am place that has a vaulted ceiling (or somethign like that) so the acoutics are amazing. does anyone know where this is - or any other fun or different things to do? thanks!Whats the best thing to do in NYC thats a bit different or fun?
Go Jet skiing on the Hudson.Whats the best thing to do in NYC thats a bit different or fun?
Best thing is buying a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes for yourself. If you are a guy, buying a pair for your girl.
You could go for a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (there's a wooden pedestrian/bicycle walkway that's above the traffic). The view is beautiful and amazing and you'll get nice exercise. Then you'll be in Brooklyn Heights which is a really beautiful place with a lovely view of lower Manhattan -if you're there in the evening the view is beautiful with the lighted skyline over the Hudson - and it has some good upscale restaurants too.
You could go to the National Museum of the American Indian down in lower Manhattan. The museum is great and it's in the most beautiful old building (used to be the Customs House and it's got beautiful murals of ships.) And I think it's still free (There's a box to drop a suggested donation and I always did, but you didn't have to actually buy a ticket when I lived there so I expect you still don't).
You could go up by Columbia University and go into the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and marvel at the Gothic architecture. You could find out if the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi will be during your visit, and then by all means go to St. John the Divine to watch the incredible service when they have camels and zebras from the zoo, horses, parrots, ostriches, and every kind of animal parading up the center aisle to be blessed and all kind of assorted dance performances, etc. during the service (I'm serious and you need not be religious to be there. You can be a tourist.) Then you could go over to Amsterdam Ave. and have coffee and a wonderful pastry at the famous Hungarian pastry shop, whatever it's called, that's on Amsterdam somewhere between about 110th and 116 (Sorry I forget quite what the cross street is)
You could find out what's playing at the Museum of Television, Film and Radio in Queens (or maybe it is called the Museum of the Moving Image? I always forget which it is) They get some great films, and sometimes with the director speaking. Amazing assortment of ethnic restaurants around there, too, some of them fabulous. Indian, Pakistani, Mexican, Thai, Chinese and who knows what else - all right next to each other, Queens is wildly diverse...Other great bets for films you wouldn't see elsewhere are Film Forum in Manhattan and the BAM Rose in a nifty area of Brooklyn.
I read that there will be an exhibit of the greatest comic-book artists at the Jewish Museum, but I cannot recall when it starts. However, I am sure you can look that up.
You could get a cheap ticket to the opera - I think the cheapest ones are $25 or $30.
There actually are trapeze lessons offered someplace around Chelsea Piers. .. don't know how expensive this is which is one reason I never tried it...
If the weather is nice or if you just want to go to Coney Island, you can take the F train to Coney Island and (a) see the beach and (b) get Russian food.
Scan the listings in The Village Voice for free or low-cost events that might interest you.
Is there still jazz open mic at Cleopatra's Needle? That was on Sunday afternoons, and could be a good show and affordable. The people who perform are serious jazz performers who are honing their chops while they are working to build a career. Listeners are supposed to have fun but be respectful, i.e. not to whoop it up and make noise while people are performing, because people are there to listen.
Go on one of those walking tours that are offered by, I think, a group calling itself The Big Onion. They always sounded very cool .... they have different tours focusing on different, and sometimes offbeat, historical or architectural aspects...Whats the best thing to do in NYC thats a bit different or fun?
I say go to a Yankees game, the fans are amazing. I went to NYC for a business conference and snuck out one afternoon of the seminar and took the subway to Yankee stadium. My luck, that day the Yankees were playing Boston so the crowd was so hilarious. When Derek Jeter drove up in his benz I peed just a little from screaming so loud..........didnt get to go to the game but seeing him upclose was the best day of my life....There are a ton of little pubs / bars along the stadium too where u can pick up yankee memorabilia. I would love to go back - I will. Thats on my to do list for 2007.
Another thing you could do - is go to downtown Manhattan and just check out all the HOT cops. I saw the best looking cop working outside The Today show. HOLY MOLY ! I took a pic with him and nearly fainted........wow. wondering if he was a model or a cop ? hmmm......
The vaulted ceiling place is in Grand Central. Its just outside the Oyster bar restaurant. Stand in diagonal opposite corners and face the wall, under the domed ceiling and speak.
Its very cool.

i haven't been to new york but when my boyfriend went there they paid $50 and took a two day tour of the city on a double decker bus, and the bus would stop at all the sights and you could get off and the bus would go and they'd have more busses going throughout the day so you can catch a bus if you miss one.
Mug an immigrant...
Actually that simulated helicopter ride in the Empire State Bldg is worth doing - even if many people here online may complain about it. Also, eat at any of those Papaya places and it is a real hoot!
Get arrested for public intoxication and beat up the cop. Get a free trip to Rikers Island.
carriage rides in the park are nice, and while not as daring as jay walking across madison ave its very nice~
I'm a native of New York City. Go to the Bronx Zoo! It's not just for kids, really! In fact, I think that teens and adults appreciate what the animals are about more than the kids do.
If you don't feel like going to the Bronx, go the the Central Park Zoo. Again, not just for kids! The entrance is approximately at the SouthEast corner of the park. The zoo is much smaller than the Bronx Zoo, but they have 2 polar bears there, and you can go window shopping on Fifth Avenue afterwards.
Feel free to email me if you want other ideas.
