The prices to get into a museum are usually the "suggested donation" so if you are dying to go to say, the Met, but don't have the full amount, you can give less. You can check the different museums' websites for this type of info. Also, some have free admission if you go after a certain time on certain days.
If you are looking for totally free, look into the galleries downtown.
If you're into art and architecture, you can just wander some of the different neighborhoods. The Upper West Side and West Village are my faves.
Go onto www.freenyc.net for some ideas. Also, just type "free nyc events" or "free nyc activities" or just "free nyc" into any search engine.
Being winter I don't know how many free concerts or movies there are right now. Those are more in the summer.
Even though the recommended donation is $20, you can give whatever you're comfortable with at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
