Definitely see which days the museums are closed and strategize visits to two: either Modern Art, the Metropolitan and/or Natural History. There are tons of other museums (Whitney, Guggenheim, for example) that you'll unfortunately have to see another time. Take the Circle Line around the island of Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty Ferry goes to Ellis Island, another museum, but since you don't have time, just take a round trip on the boat as it hops from each of those locations and back to downtown. Go to the TKTS booth in Times Square and get discount Broadway tickets for the evenings. If you like toys, FAO Schwarz and Toys RUs are real "trips". Next door to FAO is the Apple Computer Store, and their elevator is another "trip". In daylight enter Central Park at 72nd Street (either side; the West Side has Strawberry Fields and the Dakota just across the street; the East Side is just as pretty; look for the weeping willows and the famous Angel statue in the middle). Take the "6" train to Astor Place, walk south to Bleecker and walk west along Bleecker Street all the way, which turns from funky/punky University student to upscale Village (straight and gay). Take the "R", "N" or "W" to Fifth Avenue/60th Street station and walk one block east and walk up Madison Avenue until, say, 90th street. By then you'll get the gist that there are lots of people who have more money than you. There are TONS of things to do; I haven't even mentioned Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene, Park Slope, Bay Ridge, Brighton Beach areas and Coney Island) and Jackson Heights/Flushing/Elmhurst neighborhoods of Queens! Three days is too short. Here's an idea, take one of those double-decker tour buses that allow you to hop-on-and-off the first day, go to a play that evening, and tackle as much as you can the other two. Wear comfortable shoes, but try not to wear a backpack so that you'll be treated like a "native". Try blending in, get a lot of walking in to absorb the NY flavor quickly. What is/are the must-do-thing(s) in NYC?

Definitely take in a ball game (Mets or Yankees) It's just cool. Also, take a walk out on the Brooklyn Bridge for some fabulous photos.
See a broadway show. Yes its expensive but its worth it and you should live a little. Plus its a vacation.
