Go to the American Museum of Natural History. That place owns. Note that paying is for idiots. It's actually free to get in; people who pay don't realise that they're technically not paying an admission charge, but rather, are making a donation.

They just finished renovations on some of the more popular halls a few years ago, including my favourite, the Hall of Meteorites, Minerals, and Gems. If you're a fan of chemical formulas, rocks, and numbers, then this is the place for you!

Also, the museum is home to a large collection of items hounouring America's favourite racial exclusionist, Theodore Roosevelt. Statues and plaques of that guy are strewn all over the place. It's kinda unnerving, actually. Nevertheless, my recommendation still stands.

EDIT: +1 to emblimegreen's answer. Chinatown is great. Within walking distance from where I am right now, there are 3 different stores called `Dragon Jewelery`. Two of them are on the same block. Although Lower East side Chinatown is pretty amazing, Flushing Chinatown is where the fun is really at! Both are worth a visit if you are looking for miscellaneous electrical devices and baseball caps.Things To Do in NYC...inexpensive things!?
