Here's a whole bunch of free things to do in NYC year round: http://www.nyctouristcenter.com/free_thi鈥?/a>
And don't forget the Christmas window displays: http://gonyc.about.com/od/christmassight鈥?/a>What are some free things to do in NYC?
Beside Central and the Brooklyn Bridge, which are free, you can take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry and catch a glimps of the Statue of Liberty at the ferryboat cross the harbor on its way to and from Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City.
The ferry is free, which is a huge saving compare to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Ferry, which will cost you $15 to ride.
If you're getting around the city by subway, I would recommend purchase a 7-day unlimited ride MetroCard, which will come in very handy when taking multiple trip on the subway. The 7-day unlimited ride card cost $27 a person and the its good for 7-days.
For the three remaining days, you can purchase a 1-day unlimited ride card for each day you're in town. The 1-day unlimited will cost you $8.25 per person, per day.
Please note: If you're going to be in town after December 30th, it should be noted the the price for the unlimited ride MetroCard will go up slightly. The 7-day unlimited will go up from $27 to $29 a per person. The 1-day pass will be discontinued due to low patronage.
I hope this information is very helpful.
Good luck
