There are already a lot of good answers here (except for the reference to Chinatown being "horrible", but I digress...) I would like to add that both the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Natural History use a "suggested donation" for admission. It's in small print at the admissions desk and most people miss it. If you are traveling on the cheap, you can pay a few dollars instead of the full suggested admission and enjoy some world-class art and exhibits. Most other museums in the city don't have this deal, but some have discounted or free days. If you're downtown, the Museum of Chinese in America is really great and free on Thursdays. The Jewish Museum on 5th and 92nd is free on Saturdays, but some galleries and the gift shop might be closed.
Angola Beach, It's a half hour drive down route 5, but well worth the trip. Head across into canada if you have the Identification to do so. They have beaches and they are closer.

The buffalo Zoo is good. They have a baby gorilla right now. The only other zoo I know about that has one is London, it's about 1 year old, but you'd never know by how small it is. They also have a baby giraffe not more than 6 months old.

You can save money by buying tickets in advance (New York Pass, admissions, tours, landmarks, buildings, etc.) before you arrive.FREE THINGS IN NYC!!!?
The museum at FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology) is free. You can always walk in Central Park, it's nice there. And for cheap %26amp; good places to eat, there's 2 Bros dollar pizza (they have a few locations) and Gray's Papaya if you like hot dogs and fresh made juice.
Walk thru Central Park

Take the Staten Island Ferry for free. You are able to get a great view of the Statue of Liberty

Walk around Ground Zero...it is SO moving

The View Restaurant, Chef Yu(Delicious, great priced Chinese...without having to go thru the horrible ChinaTown...this is by Macy's!), Kitchenette is a cute little breakfast place...delicious banana pancakes.FREE THINGS IN NYC!!!?
You can walk through Central Park or take the Staten Island Ferry (and pass by the Statue of Liberty). I believe there are also some museums on the Upper East Side that are free.

I hope this information was very helpful.
