I'm also 20 and will be going to New York for 11 weeks next year over the summer and so ive also tried to find out less tourist type things to do. Not many on here have helped me with a similar question.

One of my main idea's is to go and do the parts of Central Park that i want to do as im not coming to New York for a park. Im also going to take a football with me and play a bit of football in the park (soccer if you are American). It's free and something i enjoy so may as well do it as it's not a like going to Empire State Building like a typical tourist but obviously Central Park is somewhere you can say you have been.

Also walk the Brooklyn Bridge as many people have to go across the bridge daily so that isn't so typically touristy. It may not be as fun as other options but im sure you will enjoy it as you will have seen it on many films and so that obviously adds to the fun side of things.

Coney Island is another option. I do want to go there as ive heard of it and its somewhere fun to go. However when i went to New York with my family in April we didn't go there as we were doing the typical tourist things that New York has to offer.

Hope that some of that was a help!

I would definitely advise you to go and do some of the tourist things in New York though as a trip to New York wouldn't be complete without going to the top of the Empire State Building, seeing the Statue of Liberty and obviously going shopping in Times Square.
Governors Island, which is open to public on Summer Weeekends only (Friday-Sunday)

Even thought there's mix of tourist and fplks living in NY Metropolitan Area, not so many tourists know about it.

You could cross following bridges:

Manhattan Bridge

George Washington Bridge

You could venture out to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge if you like hiking and bird watching.

Cloisters Museum, branch of Metropolitan Musem of Art has less tourist attraction.

You could also venture out to Westchester County to check out Lydhurst Castle, where guided tour take you inside house.

There are lots of places unknown to tourist.

If you have MetroCard, you could use on Bee-Line buses, too.Non-touristy things in NYC?
1. Go to a park in the Bronx late at night and wear minimal clothing.

2. Pay a homeless person $10 to transport you by riding on his back for an hour.

3. Public urination. You'll be a true local then.

4. Sleep in the subway.

5. Use a public restroom at Penn Station.

6. Go to an Irish pub draped in the Union Jack.

7. Pay a visit to Little Kentucky, New York's most unique ethnic neighborhood.

8. Go to a Chicago-Style Pizzeria.

9. Sell some knock-off Rolexes to tourists in Battery Park.

10. Go to the top of the Empire State Building and look out at the vista and say, "Ah, not that impressive."
We drove out there last summer from Milwaukee. We had a lot of fun just walking around. There are shops all over Manhattan to check out. We listed to this dude talk about his experiences with the WTC. I think the rebuild project is done now, check that out maybe. Otherwise, we just did a whole lot of walking.Non-touristy things in NYC?
